Sports Facts

These epic sport facts will push you to the limit! Race over here and check out our fun facts about sport.

Sport is full of facts and figures. I guess that's the point: The highest, fastest, strongest, or most gymnastically rhythmic wins. There are sports facts I'm sure you already know, like Usain Bolt is the fastest human ever, Harry Kane is the England football captain, and Serena Williams can return a serve so powerfully that the tennis ball catches on fire before it hits the baseline... But there's a lot of Sport Facts you might not know and here they are!

If you know any of these already you'll ace our sports quiz and if you're looking for a laugh, you won't be able to compete with our sports jokes.

That's so ancient!

Wrestling is recognised as the world's oldest competitive sport. Cave drawings of wrestlers have been found dating as far back as... wait for it...   3000 BC! Pictures of wrestlers have even been found in Ancient Egyptian Tombs. The sport was introduced into the ancient Olympics in 708 BC and was believed to be based on the art of Pankration, a wrestling and boxing technique supposedly used by ancient greek legend, Theseus, to defeat the minotaur!

But age is all in the mind

The oldest person to win an Olympic gold medal is Oscar Swahn. He was 72 years and three quarters when he won gold in the 100 metre running deer shooting event! And yes... Shooting deer used to be a Olympic sport!

The moon shot

So far two sports have been played on the moon. They are golf and javelin throwing. It's a wonder no-ones tried to beat the high jump record what with the lack of gravity!

Man beats whole country

Yikes. Swimmer Michael Phelps has won more Olympic medals than Portugal. Take that, Ronaldo!

Disappointing sport fact

Olympic gold medals are made from silver. Booo!

Desperate for Poona

The sport of Badminton used to be called Poona, played by British army officers stationed in India in the 1860s.

Boxing rings used to be round

That explains the name!

I forgot my PE kit.

Never mind. The word Gymnasium is greek and translates to "place of the naked"

Amazing Archer

Matt Stutzman holds the world record for longest accurate shot in archery. What makes this even more impressive is that Matt was born without arms.

Get your ducks in a row

Australian rower Bobby Pearce was so good that he won gold in the 1928 Olympic Games, even though he stopped during the race to let ducks pass in front of him!
