1. She’s Canadian!

Tate Rosner McRae hails from Calgary, which is in the Canadian province of Alberta. She was also born on the 1st of July, which is Canada Day – how patriotic! Her song “Calgary” is about growing up in the city.

2. She’s a dancer!

Tate shot to stardom as a singer, but she got her showbiz start as a dancer! She started dancing at the age of six and began competitive dance training at eight. At the age of 12 she won the Mini Best Female Dancer at the Dance Awards in New York City, and as a teenager she even attended the School of Alberta Ballet! Tate says that dancing helped her find her confidence, and she doesn’t know what she would do without it.  

3. She lived in Oman as a kid

When Tate was two her family moved to Oman in the Middle East for her father’s work. Her mother kept teaching dance there, and Tate attended The American International School Muscat. They returned to Calgary three years later, though, so Canada stayed an important part of Tate’s upbringing.

4. She danced with Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato

As a young dancer, Tate appeared in some seriously starry shows! At age 12 she was chosen from the crowd to dance on stage with Justin Bieber during his Purpose World Tour. She also danced with Demi Lovato after posting a video of herself dancing to Demi’s hit “Tell Me You Love Me” on YouTube, and appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as part of a dance troupe!

5. She appeared on So You Think You Can Dance

Tate’s first starring role was in the reality TV series So You Think You Can Dance, which she appeared on in 2016, aged 13. Tate worked hard and came third in the competition – and she’s still the highest-placed Canadian in the show’s history!

6. She was born in 2003

Tate was born in 2003, meaning she will turn 22 in 2025! She’s a Cancer, which means she’s creative, caring, sensitive and ambitious!

7. She wrote and recorded her first song at the age of fourteen

Tate was akready an accomplished dancer at the age of fourteen, and she expanded her skills in 2017 when she wrote her first song and posted it on YouTube. The song, “One Day”, was a huge viral hit and opened a lot of doors for her musical career. Tate writes most of her own music, and says she’s inspired by singer-songwriters like Taylor Swift and Julia Michaels.

8. She has a lot of influences

All great artists take their inspiration from the artists who came before them, and Tate is no exception! She’s named Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Post Malone and Khalid as her biggest musical influences. She also says that she was inspired to incorporate dance into her performances by artists like Jennifer Lopez, Bruno Mars, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

9. She’s performed songs written by Billie Eilish and Finneas

Though Tate writes most of her own material, many singers collaborate with other songwriters – and Tate’s worked with some of the best! Her first single for her record label RCA Records was penned by none other than brother-sister songwriting duo Billie Eilish and Finneas! Tate was 17 at the time

10. She’s in Lalaloopsy

That’s right, Tate is a triple threat – a dancer, a singer and an actress! Her biggest role is in the Lalaloopsy franchise, which is based on a line of dolls. She’s voiced both Princess Nutmeg and Spot Splutter Splash. She also had an uncredited role in 2014’s Annie and has talked about appearing on Broadway one day!

11. She LOVES Dua Lipa

Tate loves a lot of music, but she has a LOT of love for Dua Lipa! Tate says that Dua is not only incredibly talented as a singer, but that she especially admires Dua’s fashion sense!

Every year, American business magazine Forbes publishes a list called “30 Under 30”, which is a round-up of the most influential young people in the world. Tate made it on the list in 2020, where she was the youngest person in the Music category at just 17. Now THAT’s an achievement!

13. She’s a Zendaya fan!

I mean, who isn’t? When asked about female role models, Tate said that she admires Zendaya for being well-spoken and classy, as well as having an amazing sense of style!

14. She’s friends with Olivia Rodrigo

One of Tate’s besties is fellow pop girlie Olivia Rodrigo. They’ve been friends since 2023, when Tate appeared in the music video for Olivia’s song “bad idea, right?” Tate says that Olivia is one of her closest friends in Los Angeles, and they’ve even been spotted on holiday together!

15. She has her own YouTube channel

You can watch all of Tate’s music videos on her YouTube channel – but the channel’s actually older than you might think! Tate posted her first video in 2011, and you can watch her grow as a singer and dancer over the years!
