15 Dance Moms Facts From Beyond The Barre!
Dance Moms is one of the most intense shows on TV – but do you know it back to front?
With so many episodes to get through, there is so much to learn about the show! That’s why we’re here! We’ve distilled all of the piles of pirouettes into a set of 15 of the best facts that we can find about Dance Moms so you don’t need to spend your precious time searching for them! That time is better spent watching the show right?! So let’s get into it!
1. There are loads of episodes!
The show has been running for a really long time, and in all those years they’ve released a whopping 224 episodes of the show! That’s a whole load of dancing, and a whole load of Moms too! Have you watched them all?!
2. The Dance Studio is a real place!
It might seem as though all the Moms and teachers are acting, nobody could be THAT into dance right? But no, it’s a genuine real place in the city of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania! You could visit it, but you probably shouldn’t, rumour has it the spirits of upset Dance Moms still haunt the place!
3. The city of Pittsburgh is known as the Steel City!
The show might have tried their hardest to put Pittsburgh on the map for its dance routines, but since way back when, Pittsburgh has been the centre of the steel industry in America! It’s through this metal that the city became rich and probably why, in the long run, Dance Moms was set there!
4. The rival Candy-Apple team was made-up!
That’s right, even though the Candy Apple Studios was a real place, the Candy-Apple team was created by the show’s producers to create extra drama. They never existed in the real world and were brought together by collecting well known child dancers from competitions!
5. The show was meant to be a documentary!
It seems strange to say now, but the show was originally only going to be 6 episodes long and was going to follow the Dance Studio without adding anything extra into the mix! Of course, we all know how it ended up, but can you imagine what it would have been like if the producers had kept their distance?!
6. The producers made Fernanda Fletcher leave the show!
Fernanda is the mother of Daviana and although they appeared on the show and were great dancers, the TV show asked them to leave because they didn’t cause enough ‘drama’! Was this show really ever about the dancing?!
7. There was a British version!
Most people don’t know it, but in 2014 there was a version of the show set in Liverpool, England. It was called ‘Dance Mums with Jennifer Ellison’ and even though lots of people liked it, the show didn’t last very long and was cancelled after two seasons! Boo! Would you have like to see that show?
8. Ellen Degeneres wanted to make a film about Dance Moms!
Wild right!? But it’s true, in 2016 the hit talk show presented was thinking about making a film about Dance Moms – in the end it seems to have gone quiet so maybe we won’t be seeing one any time soon – but we can all imagine what it would have been like can’t we!?
9. It was nominated for seven awards!
For nearly every season that it ran, the show was nominated for an award at the Kids Choice TV Awards. But of all 7 nominations, the show only won once in 2015, getting a prize for ‘Nickelodeon’s Favourite Reality Show’. Do you think it deserved to win more?
10. There was an award winning play about the show!
This amazing play was written by Clare Barron, and takes a lot of inspiration from the show. It follows young girls in a dance competition and how their lives change as they move from children to young adults! Sounds familiar right?
11. The theatre version of the show ended up winning lots more awards than the show!
Even though the original show got lots of attention, when it came to awards, it was the theatre version that won the most prizes! Maybe it was because the play was a bit more serious? Maybe it’s because it had a bit less shouting in it? Whatever the reason, we’re sure the Dance Moms wish it was the other way around!
12. The show producers wanted to dye Maddie’s hair blonde!
They must have thought it would make better television, but thankfully her mum refused! Maddie Ziegler’s hair is part of her whole look now that she’s a professional dancer, so it’s probably a good thing in the long run!
13. Lots of the dancers in the show became professionals!
There were lots of dancers on the show, and a lot of them ended up spending their lives dancing full time for a job! One of the most successful was Maddie Ziegler, who has performed in big music videos from artists like Sia! So it’s not all tears in the end!
14. The ‘pyramid’ was created by the TV producers!
According to the dance studio, they never used to put the different dancers in a ranked pyramid before the show started. They say that it was the TV show that invented that idea to try and create more drama and get the mums to argue with each other.
15. A lot of the show was filmed in a doctor’s down the road!
That’s right! While most of the dancing happened in the studio – a lot of the interviews were done in a rented out doctor’s surgery just down the road! The cast and crew also had their lunch and stored all of the costumes there, it’s amazing what you can hide from behind a camera!
