4. The Show’s Producer Was a Fan of the Comic

Patrick Walters, the show’s executive producer, was a huge fan of the webcomics and backed the Kickstarter campaign to raise money to publish the first volume. He pitched it to the show’s production company, knowing it would make a great show.

5. Colours Are Important in the Show

The colours blue and yellow are significant in the show. As well as being the colour of the character’s school uniforms, they represent Nick and Charlie. As well as this, colours in general are important in the show – often the characters are lit with certain colours to represent how they feel, their identity, or a significant plot moment.

6. Heartstopper Isn’t the First Appearance Charlie Makes

Before Heartstopper, Alice Oseman wrote another graphic novel called Solitaire, which stars Charlie’s older sister! Solitaire follows Tori Spring, but Charlie also features! Alice says she always planned to go back and explore his story a bit deeper.

7. Joe Locke Was Chosen to Play Charlie Out of 10,000 People!

When it came to casting Charlie, Netflix held an open audition, and over 10,000 people applied! Before playing Charlie, Joe Locke had never acted before, but producers knew he’d be perfect for the role!

8. The Cast and Crew Are Largely LGBTQ+

The creators of the show wanted to make sure that it felt authentic to the experience of the characters, and so much of the cast and crew are, like the characters, part of the LGBT+ community. They also brought on consultants from the LGBT+ charity Stonewall to help educate everyone involved on queer issues.

9. They Never Expected Olivia Colman to Say Yes

The creators of the show never expected that Oscar winning actor Olivia Colman, who plays Nick’s mum, would say yes to the role. Luckily she was keen to be involved, and now it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role!

10. Kit Conner Needed Help To Play a Ruby Star

Kit Conner needed special training to make sure he was believable as school rugby star Nick – before the show, he’d only really played rugby briefly as a child. Joe Locke, on the other hand, didn’t bother – Charlie isn’t supposed to be good at rugby!

11. Alice Oseman Also Wrote the Scripts For the Show

As well as creating the graphic novel, Alice Oseman also wrote the scripts for the Netflix series. Originally, she didn’t think she would be involved at all, especially since she’d never written a script before.
