1. They Were Formed in Manchester in 1991
Oasis were formed in Manchester in the UK in 1991. Originally, they were connected to another band called Rain, but when Liam Gallagher joined he suggested changing the name. His brother Noel then came on board as a song writer.
2. They Were Named After a Leisure Centre
Oasis was not named after a beautiful haven in the desert, but a leisure centre! The Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon featured on a band poster in the Gallagher brother’s bedroom growing up, and it stuck in Liam’s head!
3. They Were A Big Part of Britpop
Oasis emerged in early 90s and were one of the pioneers of Britpop, a music movement in the UK that made bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Supergrass famous. Oasis didn’t always get on with their biggest rival, Blur, and their fallouts often made the headlines!
4. Noel Wrote Most of Their Songs
Noel is behind many of Oasis’ biggest hits, including hits like Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger and Morning Glory. In total, he has written over 193 songs!
5. ‘Definitely, Maybe’ Was Their First Studio Album
It came out in 1994 and was immediately a huge hit! It included tracks like ‘Supersonic’ and ‘Rock n Roll Star’. At the time, it was the fastest ever selling debut album, and its also the 2nd most streamed album of the 90s (behind Oasis’ other album, Morning Glory)
6. ‘Supersonic’ Was Written in a Day
The band wrote and recorded their hit ‘Supersonic’ in just a day! Noel wrote the song in December 1993, and the same day it was recorded at a studio in Liverpool. In fact, Noel claims it took him less than a day to write – only half an hour, while the rest of the band were eating a takeaway.
7. They Had a Rivalry With Blur
As mentioned above, the band had a bit of a rivalry with the other Britpop golden boys, Blur. The rivalry came out of several factors; Oasis were a northern band, whilst Blur were from London, and they often fought for the top spot in the chart. In fact, their rivalry is so legendary that it’s in the process of becoming a West End show!
8. ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory’ Is One of the Best Selling Albums Ever
The album sold 22 million copies – in the days before downloads and streaming! It also won Best Album at the BRIT awards, and included two of the bands biggest hits – Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger.
9. The Brothers Don’t Always Get On
The only thing more famous than Oasis’ music is the sibling rivalry between Noel and Liam! According to the brothers, they don’t like hanging out when they’re not working, and have gone for long stretches of time without talking! They don’t always say nice things about each other either; Noel describes Liam as an angry man, like ‘A man with a fork in a world full of soup’, whilst Liam has called Noel ‘A potato’!
10. They Split Up in 2009
Due in part to their sibling squabbles, the band split in 2009, having released seven studio albums, and to date selling over 75 million records worldwide! Fans were devastated, and a reunion was hinted at for the next decade…although Liam and Noel’s feuding seemed to scupper any hopes of another album.
11. The Gallaghers Are Man City Fans
As proud Mancunians, the brothers are big supporters of Manchester City. They bucked a trend in the family – all their cousins preferred Man U! The band even did a gig at Maine Road stadium, the home of their club, in 1996.
12. They Have a Bit of a Beatles Vibe…But They Were Inspired By Lots of Bands
If you couldn’t tell by their haircuts, Oasis have a bit of a Beatles thing going. As well as a similar sense of fashion and their northern roots, elements of the Beatles have inspired several of Oasis’ sounds, but they aren’t the only ones. Other bands who influenced them included The Stone Roses, The Rolling Stones, The Smiths and Inspiral Carpets, who’s poster gave them the idea for their own band name.
13. Paul McGuigan Nearly Became a Footballer
The Gallagher brothers aren’t the only members of Oasis of course – but the line up could have been very different if Paul McGuigan had become a footballer! He was a promising player and often played at Maine road, where Liam and Noel would also hang out, but a torn ligament put a stop to any footballing dreams.
14. Noel Is Left Handed
Noel, like lots of artistic people, is left handed, but he plays a right handed guitar. Apparently he couldn’t get his head round the left-handed one. The only other thing he does right handed? Eating crisps!
15. Their New Tour is Big News
The news that Oasis were reforming for a new tour was HUGE – they will play seventeen dates across the UK and Ireland in 2025. Demand for tickets was so high it broke the website! The tour is sure to be a huge success…as long as Liam and Noel can get stay friends long enough to finish it!
