1. He’s from the seaside
Mason Mount was born in Portsmouth, on the South Coast. He loves his hometown and will tell anyone who’ll listen how great it is! It was there that he got into football, and he played for local teams like Boarshunt United from a young age!
2. Chelsea was his big break
It didn’t take long for Mason’s talent to get spotted, and we was soon playing for Chelsea in the under-18 Premier League campaign. Mount scored 10 goals in 30 games during the tournament, helping Chelsea win! He also won two FA Youth Cups, the UEFA Youth League, and Chelsea Academy Player of the Year by 2017. Phew! You can bet the over-18 team had started to pay attention!
3. He likes to be up front
Like all young and aspiring footballers – Mason likes scoring goals. He’s great at attacking or playing as a central midfielder. His style of play has been described having an “exceptional passing ability”, “vision on the field”, and “creativity in attacking plays”. Sounds like he’s pretty good at scoring those goals!
4. He won the U19 Euros
We know that Mason has played for England, but just like his pro footy career, he had practice in the under 18s. Mount played for England in 2017, and helped win the UEFA European Under-19 Championship for the England national team. Probably the best possible practise for representing England as an adult!
5. Football is in his blood
It’s no surprise that Mason has always been into footy – because his dad, Tony, is obsessed with it. Tony Mason used to be a non-league footballer who later coached local clubs, including Havant Town! So we know where Mason gets it from!
6. Big Frank Lampard
Growing up, Mason always said that Frank Lampard was one of his favourite players. So it must’ve meant a huge amount to Mason to have Frank help out with his career. Frank has given Mason advice, and has very publicly backed him for his “outstanding” performances at Chelsea. Fun fact about Frank Lampard – he got an A in Latin at school!
7. Pals with Declan rice
Mason Mount is best friends with fellow England international Declan Rice. In fact, they’ve been mates since childhood! The two of them are always busy winding each other up… as we’ll see in the next fun fact about Mason Mount!
8. He’s a prankster
When the team’s away for matches and tournaments, Mason has a bit of a reputation for pranking his team mates. In fact, he often videos it and puts the footage online! A favourite prank of his is waking his mates up suddenly when they’ve tried to sneak in a few zzzs. He’s got Declan Rice with this one a few times!
9. On the England squad
One of Mason’s biggest achievements was getting on the England squad. He was called up for the UEFA European Championship (Euro 2020), and whilst the team couldn’t bring home the trophy Mason was recognised as a great player who helped their chances.
10. Calm and collected
Lots of people have lots of nice things to say about Mason. People often say he has an ability to stay calm under pressure and make the right decisions when they’re needed most. He’s shown he has leadership skills – at least on the pitch!
11. Man U!
Having made his name at Chelsea, it was time for Mason to move on. The next team he was destined to play for was Manchester United – and Mason signed for them in summer 2023. Let’s see if he can keep up his winning streak for the Reds!
12. And he got some big bucks for it!
Even if Mason didn’t want to sign for Man U, he might have done because they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Man U paid £60 million for the 24 year old midfielder – which is £55m in fees, and another £5m in “addons”. Yeeeesh!
13. Charity work
In 2021, Mason Mount became a patron of the charity Together for Short Lives. Since then he has worked with the charity to help seriously ill children, and to help support their families. We’re glad he’s using some of that £60 million for something positive!
14. When he’s not playing football…
You can probably find him on a golf course! Mason is a keen golfer, and also a big fan of Formula One. Which is funny because that’s both the slowest sport in the world, and maybe the fastest. And football is maybe in the middle?
15. He has a bright future ahead of him
