Around the 1600s, a group of people who left their homes in England sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to begin a new life. These people were called colonists and began to build their own homes, set up farms, and towns.

They began to dislike the rules that George III had created, so they fought for their independence and it became known as the American Revolution. The colonists battled the English for a long time and eventually won, and formed the United States of America.

In 1787, a group of men called 'the founding fathers' – including John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington – created a document called the Constitution, which set out some guidelines on how the country should be run, its laws and how the people who lived there should be treated fairly.

At the beginning, there were 13 original colonies: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. There are now 50 states in total, plus Washington D.C., which is a federal district. The last two states to join were Alaska and Hawaii, who joined in 1959. These are all represented by a star on the United States of America flag. The red stripes denote the original colonies.
