Summer of Adventure - How To Make a Compass!

You want to get to the beach but you don't know where it is! Don't worry - Beano have a handy guide to making your very own compass!

You've got everything you need for the beach - swimming costume, towel, snacks - but how do you get there? Here's our step-by-step guide to making your very own compass at home! It's super simple; all you need are a couple of things and an adult (Yawn, but we've got to keep them occupied over summer).

You Will Need:

  • A bowl of water
  • A needle (careful!)
  • A magnet
  • A bottle cap
  • An adult to annoy throughout the process

Step 1

Fill your bowl with water (Or cola, or soup, or baked beans...but water is best). This will be the base for your compass.

Step 2

Take the needle and the magnet, and get an adult to rub the needle on the magnet for about 20 seconds. Make sure you get the whole needle, as it needs to be properly magnetised! If the adult starts complaining about all this hard work, remind them of who the boss is!

Step 3

Place the bottle cap in the bowl so it's floating on top.

Step 4

Carefully place the needle over the bottle cap, making sure not to get any water in it.

Step 5

The needle and cap should spin to point north! You can get your adult to use a real compass or a compass app on their phone to check. If it doesn't, give it another rub with the magnet, as it may need a bit more magnet magic.

Step 6

Now you know exactly where the beach is, you can start exploring! Look at all these cool places your compass can lead you! Try using it to navigate around your house, your garden, or the local park! You could even get a friend to try and find you using only the compass! Have fun!

You could help these utterly lost jungle pals find their way to the nearest sandwich job!

To make the perfect ice cream sundae, the chopped strawberries all need to face north. Guesswork may spoil this delicious dessert, so use your new compass to make everything just so.

Found a treasure map, but not sure which way to walk? Shave off vital hours of aimless wandering by using your new gadget!

Or simply share a stunning view with your new compass, by gently holding it above some golden, powdery sands.
